Fannette Island resides within Emerald Bay and is the only island in Lake Tahoe. It was called many different names through the years including Coquette, Baranoff, Dead Man's, Hermit's, Emerald Isle and now Fannette Island. It contains what is left of the Tea House, a small stone building for Tea parties constructed by Lora Josephine Knight, the owner of Vikingsholm, a replica of a 1,200 year-old Viking castle built with materials native to the area. Some sections of the home contain no nails, pegs, or spikes. One of the interesting features of the castle is the sod roof, which covers both the north and south wings of the complex and sprouts wildflowers each spring. Fannette Island, AKA “Tea Island” is a part of Emerald Bay State Park and is accessible by boat or kayak and worthy of a visit.
